Dental Crowns: Overview

Dental crowns are used to fully encapsulate a tooth after root canal therapy, restore strength to a tooth that has been weakened by trauma or decay, or simply improve the appearance of a misshapen or aesthetically flawed tooth. During your first visit, an X-ray of the tooth will be taken to determine the overall health of the tooth. If there is sufficient decay, root canal therapy might be necessary. After anesthetizing the tooth and surrounding tissue, Dr. Nangle will file down the top and sides to make room for the dental crown. If there is a substantial amount of the tooth missing due to trauma or decay, Dr. Nangle will fill in the area to support the crown.

There are three types of dental crowns that can be used depending on the needs and goals of the patient:

Porcelain, which can be customized to match the color of surrounding natural teeth
Porcelain-fused-to-metal, which is more durable but still aesthetically pleasing
Gold, which is the most durable of all the options
