Available at Beautiful Smiles, dental bridges are designed to restore bites and enhance smiles by filling the gaps where natural teeth are missing. Dr. David Nangle creates dental bridges at our Auburn, New York practice using only the finest materials to ensure the strongest, most natural-looking results possible. If you are missing one or a few of your natural teeth, a dental bridge may be the perfect solution. Let us help you achieve the healthy, beautiful smile you deserve.
A dental bridge is used to fill in the space left by a missing tooth, or teeth. There are three basic types of dental bridges, each with its own unique purpose and benefits:
The most common type of bridge, the traditional fixed bridge, is comprised of an artificial tooth or teeth fused between two porcelain crowns. These crowns are fixed to the healthy natural teeth on either side of a gap so that the space is filled with a realistic porcelain restoration.
With resin bonded bridges, the artificial tooth is attached to the teeth adjacent to a gap via metal bands and resin cement. This type of bridge is generally used only to replace teeth that are not stressed during chewing as it is less stable and secure than a traditional fixed bridge.
The third type of bridge, the cantilever bridge, is used when natural teeth are present on only one side of a gap. In this case, the artificial tooth is typically supported by crowns attached to the two natural teeth either to the left or the right of a gap, depending on where the gap is located in the mouth.
Bridges are used in lieu of removable dentures when viable teeth are still in place. This long-lasting treatment offers many benefits; in addition to helping you look your best, dental bridges help to prevent the teeth adjacent to a gap from shifting out of their optimal position.
At Beautiful Smiles, we can help make your smile whole again. If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment to discuss dental bridges, please contact our Auburn, New York practice.
This process of fitting you with a dental bridge takes place in two parts. During your first visit to our practice, the area where the bridge will be placed will be prepped, and an impression will be taken of your mouth. After the impression is made, it will be sent to a dental laboratory, where it will be crafted to Dr. Nangle’s exact specifications. A temporary bridge or flipper will be put in place until the custom molding can be made. On your second visit, the dental bridge will be checked for its fit and bite alignment and then cemented into place.
For some candidates, it may be possible to craft a dental bridge in a single appointment using the CEREC system.
There are very few risks, and numerous benefits, associated with this treatment. In addition to the natural appearance of a dental bridge, its functionality is similar to a patient’s original teeth. When a gap between teeth is left untreated, the adjacent teeth can drift, creating problems with speech and chewing. A dental bridge can prevent this problem. With proper care, bridges can last for ten years or more.
If you are missing teeth or have problems with your bite, you may be a good candidate for a dental bridge. During a consultation at our Auburn, New York office, Dr. Nangle can help you determine whether a dental bridge, or possibly even a dental implant-supported bridge, is right for you.
